Variational differential inclusions without ellipticity condition

2020

The paper sets forth a new type of variational problem without any ellipticity or monotonicity condition. A prototype is a differential inclusion whose driving operator is the competing weighted $(p,q)$-Laplacian $-\Delta_p u+\mu\Delta_q u$ with $\mu\in \mathbb{R}$. Local and nonlocal boundary value problems fitting into this nonstandard setting are examined.

Effectiveness of Self-Hypnosis on the Relief of Experimental Dental Pain: A Randomized Trial.

This randomized, controlled clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of self-hypnosis on pain perception. Pain thresholds were measured, and a targeted, standardized pain stimulus was created by electrical stimulation of the dental pulp of an upper anterior tooth. Pain stimulus was rated by a visual analogue scale (VAS). The pain threshold under self-hypnosis was higher (57.1 ± 17.1) than without hypnotic intervention (39.5 ± 11.8) (p < .001). Pain was rated lower on the VAS with self-hypnosis (4.0 ± 3.8) than in the basal condition without self-hypnosis (7.1 ± 2.7) (p < .001). Determining a Random Schrödinger Operator : Both Potential and Source are Random

We study an inverse scattering problem associated with a Schr\"odinger system where both the potential and source terms are random and unknown. The well-posedness of the forward scattering problem is first established in a proper sense. We then derive two unique recovery results in determining the rough strengths of the random source and the random potential, by using the corresponding far-field data. The first recovery result shows that a single realization of the passive scattering measurements uniquely recovers the rough strength of the random source. Counting by Statistics on Search Trees: Application to Constraint Satisfaction Problems

In 1975, Knuth proposed a simple statistical method for investigating search trees. We use this technique for estimating the number of solutions of constraint satisfaction problem CSP and boolean satisfiability problem SAT instances. We show that, depending on domain reductions, tree-based estimates have a lower variance than estimates based on uniform sampling from the search space. Nevertheless, because the variance remains extremely high in the general case, a confidence interval cannot be derived, but a lower bound of the number of solutions. These results are confirmed by many experiments.

Concepts such as Local Theoretical Model, Mathematical Sign System, logico-semiotic outline, analytical reading, and formal competence model, elaborated within long term research programs developed in Mexico and Spain, are presented. Embedded Processing and Compression of 3D Sensor Data for Large Scale Industrial Environments

This paper presents a scalable embedded solution for processing and transferring 3D point cloud data. Sensors based on the time-of-flight principle generate data which are processed on a local embedded computer and compressed using an octree-based scheme. The compressed data is transferred to a central node where the individual point clouds from several nodes are decompressed and filtered based on a novel method for generating intensity values for sensors which do not natively produce such a value. Testbed evaluation of optimized REACT over multi-hop paths

REACT is a distributed resource allocation protocol that computes a max-min allocation of airtime for mesh networks. The allocation adapts automatically to changes in local traffic load and in local network views. SALT, a new contention window tuning algorithm, ensures that each node secures the airtime allocated to it by REACT. REACT and SALT are extended to the multi-hop flow scenario with the introduction of a new airtime reservation algorithm. With a reservation in place, multi-hop TCP flows show increased throughput when running over SALT and REACT compared to running over 802.11 DCF. All results are obtained from experimentation on the w-iLab.t wireless network testbed in Belgium.
